Dr. Fan Cheng is an associate professor and PhD supervisor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and the head of the Department of Computer Science-360 DigitalTech Artificial Intelligence Joint Lab. He obtained his PhD Degree from Information Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, supervised by Professor Raymond Yeung. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore. He has been with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2016.
His main research is on fundamental problems in information theory and applications in security and machine learning. He has conducted long-term research on information theory related to modern communication systems, including network coding, Gaussian channels, Gaussian interference channels, etc. He has published several theoretical works in international flagship journals and conferences on information theory such as IEEE Transactions on Information Theory (TIT), International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT), Information Theory Workshop (ITW). His research work has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, H863 project of Science and Technology Commission, and Huawei 2012 grant funding. He has been selected as an East Scholar of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (2018-2020) and received the Young Rising Star Award of the Information Theory Branch of the Chinese Society of Electronics.
